Canine Good Citizenship & Therapy Dog Certification PDF Print E-mail

The American Kennel Club defines the Canine Good Citizen program as "a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club".

In our Canine Good Citizen class we'll help you become a more responsible dog owner, and teach you to train your dog to be safe and responsible in day-to-day situations with other people and dogs. The class leads to an American Kennel Club award, and entitles you and your dog to enroll in our other classes such as competition obedience, rally and agility.  In the Therapy Dog class we will help you teach your dog the manners and skills needed to brighten the days of shut-ins by associating with a well trained dog. You and your dog can also be involved in reading programs, hospice/bereavement situations, and hospital visits. Passing the 15 steps of the test allows you both to become associate members of Therapy Dogs International, Inc.

The CGC class is 6 weeks class and costs $85.  The CGC test is held the 6th week of class.

If your dog earns the CGC title, you may go on to the Therapy Dog portion.  There is an additional $20 charge.  TDI testing is offered during the 2nd week.

The AKC and TDI accept both pure breed and mixed breeds into these programs.

Official evaluator(s) will administer any tests required for certification who may or may not be your course instructor.
